Who we are

We are "The Liberal Religious Voice of the Mid-Ohio Valley.

We are a typically UU-diverse congregation of 118. We are scientists, engineers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, writers, social workers, civil servants, artists, unemployed, homemakers, professors, and more; We are humanists, spiritualists, christians, pagans, theists, atheists, and others: each of us seeking truth and meaning; all providing the comfort and nurture of community to all.

It takes a lot of people for a religious community to function.  Everyone in fact, has a ministry to all others, in our view. But there are certain people who occupy positions of note: Our professional Minister is Rev. Kathryn (Kat) Hawbaker. More information and a photo can be found on the Minister page.  We are governed by a Board of Trustees that consists of Diana Bonnell (President), Virginia Henthorn (Vice President),  Diana Bungard (Secretary), Gene Barry (Treasurer), Elin Jones, Jessie Hyde, and Jay Phillips.

Other key staff persons are Assistant Treasurers Dave Cress and Linda Sue Pifer;  Church Administrator, Chris Keller;  newsletter editor, Anthony Underwood; Webmaster Ralph Olander; Pianist, Randall Kidder; and Sexton, Bud Schenkel.

We are a member congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association, whose offices are located in Boston, Mass. The UUA is divided into districts; we are a part of the Ohio-Meadville District (OMD) which encompasses an area spanning eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

What we do

We launched a new way of being in September 2008.  It is called BRIDGES and it integrates children and Adult RE and Worship services every Sunday.  Detailed information can be found on the BRIDGES page.  (Worship services begin at 11:00 am.)

We have a Men's Group that meets monthly.  The Men's Group undertakes many projects during the year to help maintain church property.

Every Wednesday evening the sanctuary is open for meditation.

For newcomers, one or two potluck Circle Suppers are held at the homes of members each month for informal socializing and fellowship.

We participate in community life with a social action outreach program that includes:

  • The Great Community Airplane Contest to raise funds for the local food pantry;
  • The Annual Empty Bowls fundraiser, also for the food pantry, that we do in conjuction with other churches in Marietta.
  • We link up with other groups in town and at Marietta College to sponsor programs related to social justice action and education.
And much more.  There are as many opportunities for meaningful involvement in the life of the congregation and the community as your imagination can create.  See the What's New page for specifics on what's happening each week.
