Meeting MinutesFirst Unitarian Universalist Society of MariettaGreen Sanctuary Committee Meeting Sunday, November 18, 2007, 12:10 p.m. FUUSM RE Building Parlor Attending: Mike, Adeline and Helen Bailey, Jim Grecni and Debra Miller, Diana Baumgard, Melena Ivanova, John Brewer, Carolyn Waltzer, Bob and Caroline Putnam, Gary Hamilton, Harry Coffey, Roger Kalter, Ralph Olander, Anna Prince, Dave Cress, and Shari Miller. Mike Bailey chaired the meeting. Audit update Roger Kalter and Gary Hamilton reported that the attic insulation will be completed. It will have blown insulation with barriers to keep it in place, but allow it to be swept aside later if necessary for other improvements. The Trust Governors are currently meeting to consider covering costs of the lift, the insulation, and a kitchen range. Other things of lesser cost brought up in the audit will be addressed through the Buildings and Grounds budget and the Fix-Up team. Recycling Aluminum:John Brewer has created a tip sheet on recycling aluminum. He will post it on the GS page and send it out via email. To date he has recycled 160.7 pounds of aluminum and raised $114.70. Electronics: John has also learned of a program for recycling cell phones, games, digital cameras, and other specific electronics. He says we could operate this as a fundraiser—collect the items that recyclers will purchase from us and use the proceeds to support local environmental initiatives and programs. Roger Kalter suggested that this program would be a good way to involve youth. Gary Hamilton and Roger also mentioned the 911 recycle of phones for use by EVE and others. John moved that we examine the process of recycling electronics as a fundraiser with any proceeds to local environmental initiatives and issues. Roger seconded the motion. Discussion showed good interest. The motion was put to a vote and passed. Ideas from Co-op America Mike showed the committee the Coop America National Green Pages, which gives more sources for recycling many different things. Reporting on the local level, Roger said that the Salvation Army recycles fabrics and clothing whereas Goodwill does not. Mike suggested that we need a booklet on recycling in Marietta. He remarked that many people are unaware of scrap yards and other recycling places in the local area. Caroline Putnam said the Recycling Center booklet is a good start. Roger said help for assembling such a booklet might be available through Marietta College leadership student efforts. Dave Cress said that creating a recycling database would also be a good Marietta College student project. Dave also suggested that we check with other churches doing Green projects, perhaps having Rev. Kat investigate. Roger suggested that our Empty Bowls partners would be a good starting point. Green consumables update Joan Coffey’s project of investigating the use of Green products at FUUSM is ongoing. The Board has approved the sexton’s use of Green products, but the committee is not sure where the project stands at this time. Legislative information and discussion Mike has made arrangements for a guest speaker after the meeting. Noelle Janka, a field organizer for the National Environmental Trust, will speak to the group about putting pressure on legislators and getting positive action on pending environmental legislation. The next meeting was set for Sunday, December 16, after the worship service. The meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Adeline Bailey |
