Meeting Minutes

First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta
Green Sanctuary Committee Meeting
11:45 a.m., Sunday, December 16, 2007
FUUSM RE Building Parlor

Attending: Brad Bond, Rev. Hawbaker, Ralph Olander, Joan Coffey, Jim Grecni, Debra Miller, Harry Coffey, Jessie Hyde, and Mike and Adeline Bailey.

Mike Bailey chaired the meeting.

Audit status
Building and grounds: Attic insulation, including a foot of fiberglass material, has been completed. Air leaks around the windows in the RE building will be addressed by the fixer-upper committee headed by Darryl Ting.
The committee is still looking for someone to put the audit together for the report.

Recycling.
Aluminum: John Brewer sent a report showing that since May of 2007, 222.7 lbs. of aluminum have been recycled for the committee, with a total of $157.30 collected.
Cell Phones: Labels have been created to go on jars to be put out in public as well as at FUUSM to begin collecting as soon as possible, hoping to capitalize on people wanting to recycle phones when they get new ones for Christmas. Jessie Hyde took the first collection containers for placement to kick off the project. Approximately 50 jars will be placed eventually.
Local political activism: Roger Kalter said we should start early on trying to get recycling for business and apartment complexes through city contracts.
Mike said we should apply any profits we make on recycling to some local environmental group.
Roger mentioned a project for adding trees to the bike path as a possible place money could be used.

2008 Budget requests for GS
The committee urges the use of recycled paper in the office, and “green” products in cleaning for next year. After discussion, it was decided that those expenses will be covered by other budget lines. GS originally had a budget to cover application for certification. That will still be needed in the future.
Brad Bond suggested that we request a budget that would include corporate memberships for groups like Friends of Lower Muiskingum River and RECOVER. After further discussion, Brad Bond moved that the Green Sanctuary committee of FUUSM purchase a nonprofit status membership for $50 in Friends of Lower Muskingum River, to be paid for out of aluminum recycle earnings.
Harry Coffey seconded the motion, which was approved unanimously.
Ralph Olander suggests that we also have membership applications for FLMR and other groups available in the Fellowship Hall to encourage individual memberships.

Presentation on paper products.
Joan Coffey reported her evaluations of cost and efficacy of “green” toilet tissue and paper towels. Roger said we should use washable cloths in the kitchen whenever possible. (He is willing to launder them some of the time.) Roger will provide buckets to hold clean cloths and dirty cloths and get a roster together to share washing duties. Jim Grecni will make signs to label the buckets. Roger also mentioned that we need to collaborate with the Kitchen committee when it is revived.

The next meeting was set for Sunday, January 20, after the worship service.
The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Adeline Bailey
