Meeting MinutesFirst Unitarian Universalist Society of MariettaGreen Sanctuary Committee Meeting 12 p.m., Sunday, April 20, 2008 FUUSM RE Building Parlor Attending: Ralph Olander, Elin Jones, Roger Kalter, Shari Miller, Patti Troisi, Gary Hamilton, Joan Coffey, Carolyn, Brad Bond, Harry Coffey, Mike and Adeline Bailey. Mike Bailey chaired the meeting. Old Business Phone recycling John Brewer received a letter from the phone recycler, who requests that we send in whatever we have collected. Aluminum collection Recent sale of about a truckload (12-14 bags of crushed cans) of collections brought in $99.90. Shari needs help in installing the crusher purchased for her use. Roger said he has a large metal drum that it could be mounted on. Annual meeting proposal As amended, the proposal says we can make contributions to local groups in the name of FUUSM, and then encourage others to join as members individually. Mike proposed that the committee support Dan Harrison’s Simply Green House. Roger Kalter moved that we donate $100 to Simply Green House in the name of FUUSM with Board approval. Gary seconded the motion, which passed. Since it would be beneficial to raise awareness of the Simply Green House, there was discussion about displaying it for FUUSM, at the Y, at the mall, and at other public venues. The committee will talk to Dan about ways Green Sanctuary could help. Other ideas of things to “invest” in: Roger says WASCO makes signs for trash/recycle bins that read, “It’s always right to recycle,” indicating trash section to the left and recycle to the right. He also suggested placing a recycle bin on church property. Another suggested location is the bike trail. It was suggested that recycle bins could have signs on them that publicize the church or other groups. Battery Collection Brad says there is a bin at the recycle center. It was suggested that the clear plastic jars which were intended for electronics/cell phones collection could be reassigned for battery collection. Mike and Roger will investigate whether the Eveready facility collects spent batteries. New Business Books on green topics unsold and rescued from the church book sale are now available for sign out. The location of the Green Sanctuary library shelf will be publicized to the congregation. Worship Committee would like a representative from Green Sanctuary to attend their retreat on May 3. Several summer programs will feature environmental topics: Elin Jones will present a program on native plants. She has invited native plant expert Frank Porter to speak. Dan Harrison will give an update on green building and progress made over the past year. Local environmentalist Marilyn Ortt will talk to the Green Sanctuary group in May about making a summer presentation. Green Products Joan has lost her earlier research on green products. Bud Schenkel and the Board are willing to go green with cleaning products, but they need to know where to purchase them. Joan recommends Clorox Green Works for now, since those products are readily available and FUUSM can take action. She will continue to investigate products and consider other recommendations at a later time. The committee discussed sponsoring a Green Dinner and Movie Night sometime in mid-August. The dinner, which the committee would prepare and serve to the congregation, would be a menu of all local foods. The movie suggested is “The 11th Hour,” produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. Discussion continued on “green” products and our concerns about determining which ones are really green. The idea of selling them to the congregation—like the fair trade coffee sales—was mentioned. Roger said the Kroger wetlands offers another opportunity to make a difference in local environmental work. Work crews of volunteers are needed to refurbish paths there. Those interested should contact Roger for more information. The meeting was adjourned at 1:00p.m. Respectfully submitted, Adeline Bailey |
