Meeting MinutesFirst Unitarian Universalist Society of MariettaGreen Sanctuary Committee Meeting 12 p.m., Sunday, June 15, 2008 FUUSM RE Building Parlor Attending: Diana Bungard, Shari Miller, Brad Bond, Bob and Caroline Putnam, Carolyn Waltzer, Ralph Olander, Roger Kalter, Mike and Adeline Bailey. Mike Bailey chaired the meeting. Minutes Corrections to minutes of the April meeting: John Brewer did not receive the letter from the electronics recycler; it was addressed to him, delivered to the church office, and Mike Bailey intercepted it and presented the info at the April meeting. Elin Jones made arrangements for the summer service on native plants; the talk will be given by the speaker she invited, Dr. Porter. Old Business Phone recycling The phones collected are still to be turned in. Aluminum Most recently collected cans are still to be crushed and taken to the recycler. Mike said he has the proceeds from the last sale of aluminum, but they have not been deposited as yet. Shari says the can crusher needs to be repaired before she can crush the cans she has collected. Donation to Simply Green House Mike will submit the committee’s plan for donation in the name of FUUSM to the Board for approval, as per the April motion. Battery collection Mike and Roger will check with the local Eveready facility to determine whether they have a recycling program. Brad confirmed that there is a battery collection area at the Marietta recycling center. Phone collection labels for the plastic jars need to be converted to reflect spent battery collection. Waste collection contract in Marietta Roger said the city has switched their contract from Waste Management to Rumpke. Carolyn said she had been in contact with the mayor of Vienna, looking for information about curb side recycling. The mayor said that WV mandates curbside pickup in cities. He has a request in with the city council for that and would welcome public support to help get it passed. Per Carolyn, he also remarked that commercial recycling is not mandated; if it were, what a difference that could make in the waste stream. Disposing of fluorescent bulbs Carolyn says there are instructions on line for putting the bulbs in with waste disposal. She will send the web address for the information to the committee. Summer Worship Services Services are planned around the theme, “Faith in Action”, including the following with green connections: June 29 Native Plants, Not Lawns, with Frank Porter speaking July 13 Solar Energy Homes and Clean Ohio Act, with Marilyn Ortt speaking July 27 Green Building, with Dan Harrison speaking August 17 Green City Planning, with Sarah Landers speaking In addition, the Green Sanctuary committee will support the summer RE program, which is planned around the theme, “Cherish the Universe”. Caroline will lead the RE classes on a nature walk on the outdoor education trail on June 29; Brad will take the classes on a nature walk on the city park and bike path on August 3 and also give a tour of the recycle center on August 10; help is also needed for craft days at the church on July 13, July 27, August 17, and August 31. Donations of recycled office paper and cardboard tubes has been requested. Green Products There was continued discussion about selling green products through a program similar to the fair trade coffee sales. Ralph suggested a “Shameless Commerce Division booth” set up in the same location each week to promote green products. Caroline raised the question of sales tax. Roger said we would need to determine that products are really green, and also consider company practices. Diana and Mike suggested that people who are interested in using green products would probably buy them on their own anyway. Mike will check with his former UU congregation to see how they handle these potential problems. Kroger wetlands Help with maintaining the trails is still needed. Roger said he will supply wheelbarrows and tools to get a work crew into action. Mike said that the Men’s Group might volunteer for this project. Caroline said the Recycle Center also needs help. Mike said he would bring that to the Men’s Group as well. Also, Roger said he can use help with clean up after the July 20 Ice Cream Social. Shari, Diana, and Adeline agreed to head a planning committee for the Green Dinner and Movie Night. Saturday, August 30 was proposed as the date for the event, to be held in the Fellowship Hall. Mike agreed to check on the availability of the date with Chris in the church office. The meeting was adjourned at 1:00p.m. Respectfully submitted, Adeline Bailey |
