Meeting Minutes

First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta
Green Sanctuary Committee Meeting
12 p.m., Sunday, August 17, 2008
FUUSM RE Building Parlor

Attending: Anna Prince, Debra Miller, Jim Grecni, Harry Coffey, Rebecca Phillips, Ralph Olander, Tom Sharretts, Margaret Osborne, Diana Bungard, Sarah Landers (guest speaker), Carolyn Waltzer, Mike Bailey, and Adeline Bailey.

Mike opened the meeting with reports on the following activities since last meeting:

Recycling

$261.50 income from recycling aluminum has been added to the GS account.

Congregational Education

Summer services speakers and RE program activities were mentioned.
Former member Sarah Landers was the speaker at the service today, giving a presentation on green city planning. Mike also thanked Sarah for contributing her honorarium to the Green Sanctuary Committee.

Community Action
  • A check has been sent to RECOVER as approved at the last meeting.
  • Mike and Roger Kalter helped with cleanup at the Broughton Ice Cream Social in July. Mike said very little recycling was done at the social, in part because no clearly labeled containers were in place. Diana Bungard described color-coded receptacles she has seen at some public functions and said we should coordinate our efforts with other recycling efforts.
  • The idea of helping establish a recycle program for large community events such as the county fair and the Sternwheel Festival, was suggested, including the GS group lobbying the groups in charge of the events (planning committees, county commissioners, or fair board) about providing properly labeled recycle containers at all such functions. It was also suggested that we look into participating in the Ohio Adopt-A-Highway program or perhaps plan a work party to pick up trash on county roads.

Harvest Celebration Dinner Plans

The rest of the meeting was focused on planning for the dinner to be held Saturday, August 30.
  • After personally surveying the congregation, Mike said he had 34 affirmatives for the event.
  • Several food donations have been lined up, including some organic meat products as well as locally grown vegetables.
  • Margaret Osborne reported that she had received an updated list of farmers’ markets in West Virginia and was still expecting a response from Ohio department of agriculture. She will compile a list of “local” markets to be set out at the dinner. She hopes to have Rossi pasta donated, and has also arranged for herbs and spices to be donated by Mother Earth in Parkersburg.
  • The planning committee will purchase whatever else we need from local sources.
  • Rebecca Phillips volunteered to coordinate donations of flowers to decorate the tables.
  • Volunteers for work crews to set up, cook, serve, and clean up were solicited.

Recipes for Green Living

The next project suggested for the committee is a “Recipes for Green Living” booklet. Everyone on the committee and in the congregation is invited to share their hints and recipes for green living, including home remedies for health and beauty, organic gardening tips, green cleaning solutions, and anything else that makes life greener.

The meeting was adjourned around 1:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Adeline Bailey
