Meeting Minutes

First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta
Green Sanctuary Committee Meeting
10 a.m., Sunday, September 21, 2008
FUUSM Fellowship Hall

Attending: Bob and Caroline Putnam, Patty Troisi, Anna Prince, Jim Grecni, Debra Miller, Gary Hamilton, and Mike and Adeline Bailey.

Mike Bailey chaired the meeting.

Green Dinner wrap-up The first green harvest dinner sponsored by the GS Committee was called a success. Mike reported that the dinner costs were only around $200 because so much of the food was donated. The aluminum recycling raised enough to cover the out of pocket items. The Rossi pasta, which we had hoped would be donated, was our most expensive single item, but we accepted donations for the leftover uncooked pasta to help defray costs.

Budget We still have enough in the budget to plan for donating to another group. Anna suggested we look for a group dealing with invasive plant species. It was suggested that this could also work as an intergenerational education project, perhaps having youth/children collect invasive plants and get paid something for what they collect.

Phone recycling The committee approved the idea of passing on phones we've received to other local groups that are collecting them rather than doing the recycling ourselves as a GS project. Several locations were noted, where different groups have been collecting them: Foodland in Vienna, the Hasty Shopper in Devola; Eve; the Domestic Violence Coalition in Parkersburg; and Ely Chapman in Marietta. Roger Kalter was suggested as a source for locating groups to take our donations. Patty Troisi volunteered to take charge of the GS part of the project.

"Recipes for Green Living" booklet project The committee discussed what could be included in a booklet of this sort. A time line was proposed. Ideally, the booklet would be printed and ready for distribution by the winter holiday season of 2009. The text and illustrations would be laid out and ready to go to print by September 2009. It was suggested that we create flyers and posters announcing our plans for the booklet and soliciting articles, recipes, essays, artwork, and other information. Forms to help organize the contributions will be developed to go along with the posters. To help structure the booklet, various headings were suggested, as follows: Energy, Recipes, Food, Household, Lawns and Gardens, Health, Community, Recycle. Elin Jones was named as a possible poster maker. It was also suggested that the children of the congregation might take on some illustrations as part of the Bridges program. Action item: The proposed title, "Recipes for Green Living," seemed too much like a cookbook title to the assembled committee, so all members are to bring alternative title suggestions centered on sustainable living to the October meeting.

Native Plantings/Memorial Garden. Mike raised the idea of creating a native plant display in the memorial garden area. Frank Porter, a native plants expert who spoke at one of the summer services, has offered to help if there is interest in taking on the project. Mike said there is an area near the RE/Office building that Elin Jones, a member of the grounds committee, has indicated is a problem area where help would be appreciated. It was suggested that we come up with a budget for this type of project, and check with the board and grounds committee to develop a cooperative plan. Rebecca Phillips was also named as a congregational resource person for help with native plantings.

The meeting adjourned to the memorial garden to look at the area where the project might be take shape.

Respectfully submitted,
Adeline Bailey
