Mike Bailey chaired the meeting.

Old business
Green Harvest dinner Expense total is still pending.

Phone recycling Patty Troisi reported a check for $69.91 had been received from the first collection sent in. It was suggested that we advertise the collection more and keep the program going. Patti will continue as contact person.

"Recipes for Green Living" booklet project The sub committee of Caroline Putnam, Shari Miller, and Adeline Bailey have not yet met.

Native Plantings/Memorial Garden. Elin Jones and Nancy Novak from FUUSM grounds committee have agreed to meet with Frank Porter, native plant expert, to begin planning for the display area of native plants, but the meeting has not yet taken place.

Green Sanctuary certification Mike reminded everyone to look at the UUA website for new information and new specifications for certification. One of the requirements for certification is to plan two celebration services. Ralph Olander suggested connecting one celebration with Earth Day. Anna Prince suggested having one week in the Amazing Month of May art celebration with a focus on "green art."

Aluminum recycling The last load of cans and other aluminum brought in $50.75. The price of aluminum is down; in fact, all recycling is down. Brad Bond said the price has dropped so low that the local recycling center is no longer able to find anyone to take the cardboard they collect. Mike Bailey suggested storing cardboard until such time as it can be recycled. Roger Kalter advised that anyone storing cardboard beware of rodent and fire hazards. Anna Prince said that cardboard can be of use in the garden, to help create paths.

Recycling batteries Diana Bungard purchased a kit for battery collection and a second kit for recycling flourescent bulbs. Perchased through Waste Management, the cost per kit is approximately $16.00. Action item: Roger Kalter will take the kit, fill it and send it back, to see how the recycling program works.
Brad Bond reminded the group that the Marietta Recycling Center does take batteries.
The recycling of these hazardous waste materials prompted a resolution for the GS committee. Action item: The committee will combine efforts to take hazardous waste to the annual collection.

New business
Community Gardens Roger Kalter said that a group from the congregation could take a plot in the Harvest of Hope garden. Action item: Investigate taking on a community garden plot. (No specific volunteers for this item.)
Additionally, Roger has applied for grants to create a raised bed garden at the Y. He has arranged for bamboo to build the beds and can get free top soil, but he needs help with creating the raised beds. Action item: Plan work crews to help with Y raised bed gardens. (No specific volunteers for this item.)

Recycled/"green" products Carolyn Waltzer will be taking over the testing of "green" products. She will report next month and share with the congregation.

Recycled Christmas Tree John Brewer has the tree in place in the Fellowship Hall and has begun to decorate with ornaments made from recycled materials.
Action item: Add additional decorations as available.

The meeting was adjourned around 1:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Adeline Bailey
