Confirming Upcoming Schedule Next regular meeting – Sunday, April 18, 2010, 12:15 p.m. in the Parlor Earth Day Marietta Celebration – Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the Armory. This is corrected date from last meeting announcement Earth Day Mike reported that a master gardener’s group plans to do a composting project. Consensus was to let the experts handle that project. General discussion ensued on what GS might do as a demonstration or project. Diana Bungard suggested a Yes/No display showing green vs. not green products and methods, such as baking soda and vinegar opposed to chemical cleaners; recycled material paper plates versus Styrofoam, or using clotheslines versus dryers. Giving away wooden clothespins was settled on, with discussion of dying them green or adding magnets. Most agreed this was a workable idea. Diana agreed to head up the display production. All GS members are to think on further ideas for display, and submit them through the GS email list. A special follow-up meeting to work on posters or displays was set for April 11. The committee discussed what would be needed for the booth at the Earth Day event. Canopy – borrow from Dave Ballantyne; tables – get from church; cardboard for display – Roger Kalter and Mike Bailey to supply; backdrop for display – borrow church bulletin board; decorations for table – borrow from multicultural booth; FUUSM banner, earth flag, chalice, etc. – get from church or individuals. Mike said we also need to put together a list of volunteers to staff the booth at the event. Green products Silver Bridge Coffee-Joan Coffey is now authorized to purchase two cartons as a trial run to consider whether to use the coffee for fellowship hour. Mike said the costs can be covered from GS aluminum can recycling proceeds. Receipts from any expenditures for GS activities should be turned in to Mike. Diana Bungard showed some CVS brand biodegradable plastic garbage bags that are made from recycled materials. She said they carry a line of recycled disposable products as well. Green Solutions booklet- The booklet is not yet complete. Harvest Dinner/Community Garden-- GS still needs to have discussions with the Auction Committee to plan for the dinner in connection with the auction. Barbara Dernberger reported that seeds for the garden have been received and tomato seedlings are already up. Mike is working on a plan and schedule for planting. Jim Grecni said we should stagger plantings to keep garden produce coming over a longer period, hoping to have something fresh for the dinner. There is also a plan to preserve some of the harvest to use over a longer period. Roger Kalter has delivered a tool shed and composting bins to the garden area. He says there is mature compost ready to use in the garden, and hopes to arrange for some help from Marietta College students on community service day (April 24??) Mike and Ralph Olander will work on shredding the leaves collected for mulching and composting. Diana Bungard has a wheelbarrow to donate to the garden tool supply. Barbara, Mike and Adeline, and Roger will attend an organizational meeting with the community garden team and participants at 2 p.m. today (3/28). Request from Worship and Music Committee-- The W&M committee would like the following “green testimonies” at services in April: April 11 – a testimony with a poetic or visionary focus; April 18- a testimony focused on hard science; April 25 – a testimony focused on practical lawn or garden care. Carolyn Waltzer has agreed to present information from her son’s research on April 18; Jim Grecni will present information on alternatives - such as blueberry bushes- to traditional landscaping plantings on April 25; April 11 is not yet assigned. OMD Conference GS Workshop-- Mike returned from the conference with the encouraging message that our congregational efforts to achieve GS certification are on par with most other congregations. He said the session offered a good sharing of ideas, such as involving youth and families in GS through a camping weekend to area parks, offering a special eco camp for youth, creating or participating in free cycle programs, building a temporary labyrinth, building a rain garden, showing eco videos, participating in larger community events, using Interfaith Power and Light. He also got email links to get more information. Ralph mentioned the 40/40/40 UU project, which he suggested we consider. Mike will distribute more information on that and other projects of interest via email. Recycle Reminder-- We are still collecting ink jet and toner cartridges, aluminum, and batteries. Adjournment-- The meeting was adjourned at 1:45.
