First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta Green Sanctuary Committee Meeting 12:45 p.m., Sunday, April 18, 2010 FUUSM Parlor, RE building Attending: Linda Dauber, Shari Miller, Roger Kalter, Debra Miller, Jim Grecni, Lela Erb, Gary Hamilton, Diana Bungard, Ralph Olander, Patty Troisi, Jesse Hyde, Mike & Adeline Bailey. Mike Bailey chaired the meeting. Confirming Upcoming Schedule Next regular meeting – Sunday, May 16, 2010, 12:15 p.m. in the Parlor Blessing of the Seeds – Sunday, April 25, 2010 at the garden Green Testimony – Jim Grecni, Sunday, April 25, 2010 Earth Day Diana Bungard’s suggestion of a yes/no activity made for a successful booth, with good participation from GS and attendees at the Earth Day celebration. Mike thanked all those who loaned/donated items for the booth, helped set up or tear down, and/or staffed the booth. Silver Bridge Coffee Joan Coffey purchased the coffee for fellowship hour Silver Bridge as compared with Equal Trade policies. Mike said Joan had previously described the company’s profit sharing with a women’s group. Community Garden Mike said manure, composted leaves are available. The water source is installed, and next Sunday the Worship Committee will conduct the Blessing of the Seeds after service at the garden. Green Testimonies Carolyn Waltzer presented a science-based talk today; Jim Grecni will present information on alternatives - such as blueberry bushes- to traditional landscaping plantings on April 25. New Business Group Membership Jim Grecni raised the idea of GS taking a membership in the Ohio Environmental Council, a group that stopped plans for new coal-fired power plants in Meigs County and are working on passing a bill regarding stopping pollution created by school buses when they are idling outside schools. Jim is to get more information about group memberships in the organization. OMD workshop ideas Mike brought up the idea of a family camping trip as a means of including young families more directly in GS activities. Debra Miller and Jim Grecni will investigate possible dates, locations, and activities. Recycling Shari Miller said that people in the congregation need to be made aware of the many things we recycle. Ralph Olander said a mountain of cans need to be crushed and taken to the metal recycler. 40-40-40 FUUSM is registered to participate in this UU program celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day with 40 days of commitment by 40 UUs in each congregation. Community garden schedule Mike, Joan, Barbara Dernberger and Roger will develop a schedule for planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting and call on others to help. Other Jesse Hyde offered perennial herbs to plant in the garden. Mike and Roger offered two tall raised beds for the church yard and two others in the garden for the herb plantings.
